COMMUNITY THE McDOWELL Deaths Mary Browning Crooks CLEVELAND, Tenn. Mrs. Mary Browning Crooks, 103, of Cleveland, died Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013. She was born on Paddy's Creek, Burke County, July 2, 1910, and was a lifelong member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.

Mary was married to John C. Crooks who preceded her in death by 42 years. Together they, operated a store and boat landing at Canal Bridge on Lake James for many years. Mrs. Crooks was also preceded in death by her parents, Millard A.

I Browning and Harriett Ollis Browning. In addition to her, parents and husband, Mary was preceded in death by six brothers, James (Jim), Jeff, Smith, Jeter, Theodore, and Hamp Browning; four sisters, Lula Browning Craig (who lived to be 107), Vona Browning McLean, Texie Mae Browning (who passed when she was 7), and an unnamed infant; stepdaughters, Naomi Crooks Johnson and husband, Kurt, of Ft. Myers, and Pau-1 line Crooks Yancey of Glen Alpine; a stepson, Earl Crooks and Muriel; a nephew, Larry Yancey; a daughter-inlaw, Dorothy Dellinger Crooks; two sons-in-law, Cleve Cooper and Alfred Stamey; an infant daughter, Minnie Belle Crooks; and an unnamed stillborn. 4. For more information check Facebook and the McDowell High Alumni page. Willie Mae Bright Davis MARION Mrs. Willie Mae Bright Davis, 90, passed away peacefully Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, at Autumn Care of Marion, following a period of declining health.

She was born in Marion, April 28, 1923, to the late Justice Bright and Ida Pool Bright. A faithful member of Providence United Methodist Church, she served in many ways, most notably with the United Methodist Women. She worked at various times as a bank teller at First Union Bank and Bank of America but her true calling was as a wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many. An endearing and warm nature was like a magnet that drew people to her because they saw in her a character and friendly bearing that was easy to love. She was loved by all who knew her and will be dearly missed.

She is survived by her daughter, Linda Davis Hamilton and husband, Jim, of Marion; and granddaughter, Emily Linda Hamilton. Her husband of 60 years, Jerold Davis, preceded her in death in 2007. Other surviving members include her brother, Ted Bright of Marion; two sisters, Selma Jones of Spindale and Betty Ann Whitson of Marion; five nieces, Cynthia Jones, Janice Waycaster, Susan Bell, Hazel Rector and Wilma Moore; and four nephews, Jerry Jones, Dennis Whitson, Jim Davis and Howard Davis. A service in celebration of her life will be held today (Tuesday, Sept. 3), at 11 a.m.

at Providence United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ross O'Neal officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service, at the church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
