Gas prices have fallen 21.7 cents in Northwest Indiana over the past week and should continue to decline, according to an analyst from GasBuddy.com.
Prices had jumped locally due to a power outage at the ExxonMobil refinery in Joliet, one of the Midwest's largest refineries after the BP Whiting Refinery.
The average price of a gallon of gas fell to $3.89 in the Gary metropolitan area that encompasses Lake, Porter, Newton and Jasper counties, according to GasBuddy.com. A survey of 314 local gas stations found the average gas price in Northwest Indiana stood 30.3 higher than a month ago and 2.5 cents lower than a year ago.
The average price of gas per gallon was $3.67 in Lake County, $3.68 in Porter County, $3.42 in LaPorte County, $3.53 in Newton County and $3.45 in Jasper, Starke and Pulaski counties.
Nationally, gas prices have fallen 3.2 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.41 a gallon Monday. The national average is down 11.6 cents per gallon as compared to a month ago and 42.5 cents per gallon lower than a year ago, according a GasBuddy survey of 150,000 gas stations around the country.

Gas prices cost an average of $4.28 a gallon in the greater Chicagoland metro, which was down 9.6 cents per gallon as compared to the previous wee.
"As summer driving season comes to a gradual close, we continue to see gasoline prices declining in most of the country as demand remains muted. Incredibly, the drop has also caused diesel fuel prices to crumble to their lowest level since before Russia's invasion of Ukraine," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis atGasBuddy. "As long as we can avoid a major hurricane threatening refineries in the Gulf region, I believe we could see declines continue into this week, with the national average potentially dipping to its lowest level of the summer. However, should economic data come in better than expected, there still could be a short-lived rally. While some states may also see gas prices rise to routine price cycling, primarily in the Great Lakes and Florida, prices across the board remain lower in every state compared to a year ago."
